Akinbolu Elemide is a student currently enrolled in the Personal Support Worker (PSW) program at the Academy of Learning (AOL) in downtown Toronto. Originally from Nigeria, Akinbolu’s journey into the Canadian healthcare sector is a testament to resilience, empathy, and a profound desire to make a difference.

In Nigeria, Akinbolu worked in accounting and later in a pediatric hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon moving to Toronto, he saw a unique opportunity to support Canada’s healthcare system as a PSW. This role was unfamiliar to him as structured support worker positions are less common in Nigerian healthcare. “I saw the need for PSWs here, and I wanted to be part of that,” Akinbolu shares.

For Akinbolu, AOL has been transformative. “This program has opened me up,” he explains. “It has taught me cultural competence and the power of empathy. I now understand how to look at others with compassion and support.” His instructor’s patience and encouragement have been instrumental, teaching him the hands-on skills needed to provide compassionate care.

Through AOL’s interactive and supportive approach, Akinbolu feels empowered. “In just five months, I feel ready to enter the workforce,” he says, adding that he now sees a future in healthcare and even plans to pursue nursing.

Akinbolu’s journey is an inspiring example of how career colleges like AOL are preparing students to meet critical workforce needs in healthcare. As he continues his studies, he embodies the dedication that PSWs bring to patient care every day—making him a vital asset within Canada’s healthcare system.
