SKILLED TRADES

A Stronger Workforce,

A Stronger Canada.

Skilled Trades: A Stronger Workforce, A Stronger Canada

Canada faces a significant shortage of skilled trades workers—an issue that poses serious risks to economic growth and the stability of critical sectors such as construction, infrastructure, and manufacturing. With nearly 700,000 tradespeople expected to retire by the end of the decade, the demand for well-trained talent is growing rapidly.

The National Association of Career Colleges (NACC)’s regulated career colleges (RCCs) have been helping meet this challenge. By providing industry-aligned training and apprenticeship opportunities, RCCs are equipping students with the skills needed to strengthen Canada’s workforce and support its economy through challenging times.

“NACC members share Canada’s vision for a stronger, more resilient country. Our regulated career colleges are training the skilled trades professionals needed in critical sectors across the nation. We stand ready to work with government and industry to ensure Canadians have access to the high-quality training they deserve.”

— Michael Sangster, CEO, NACC

Why Skilled Trades Training Matters

Skilled trades professionals are essential to a strong and resilient Canadian economy. From carpenters and electricians to welders and plumbers, these workers power the projects that shape our communities and drive progress in infrastructure, housing and manufacturing.

Key Industry Facts

  • Labour shortage: Canada urgently needs more skilled tradespeople to meet economic and policy demands.
  • Government support: The federal government recognizes the need to invest in the skilled trades and have committed to creating more opportunities for students and apprentices. During the recent election campaign, Prime Minister Carney committed up to $8,000 in training support per learner and $15,000 in funding for workers in priority sectors.
  • Immediate impact: NACC’s RCCs train thousands of skilled trades workers annually, preparing them for stable, high-demand, and well-paying careers with a direct pipeline into the workforce.
