For Jamie May, Discovery College is more than just an educational institution; it’s a catalyst for personal and professional growth. As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), and mentor, Jamie’s connection to the college is multifaceted. She graduated from its Practical Nursing and Health Care Assistant (HCA) programs, teaches CPR and First Aid, and mentors graduates as they step into healthcare roles.

“Discovery College is community, family, a safe and inclusive space where people achieve their best. It’s a place where dreams come to life,” Jamie shared.

Jamie credits the college’s supportive environment for fostering students’ success. “They take care of students from day one—financially, emotionally, and academically—and ensure they graduate ready to make an impact,” she explained. Discovery College hires experienced, compassionate instructors who instill more than technical skills—they pass on the importance of empathy and resilience.

Currently, Jamie works for Green Staff Home Care in Nanaimo, where she partners with Discovery College. She engages with HCA graduates, discussing the differences between working in home care and facilities, and offers mentorship to guide them in their career paths.

Through her mentorship, Jamie helps students transition into healthcare careers, emphasizing the emotional and physical dedication required. “It’s a holistic, organic experience. Discovery ensures compassion and care come full circle—from instructors, to students, to the community.”

Her story reflects Discovery College’s mission: to prepare students not just for meaningful careers, but for meaningful lives of service. Jamie’s ongoing dialogue with students ensures they are supported even after graduation, creating a full-circle experience where she now hires graduates from the very place she once taught.
